Thankful to have started my career here, but there's room for improvement

Pros
  • Managers in my department respect work-life balance, are generally supportive, and don't micromanage.
  • Fun, casual culture.
  • I'm compensated very well because of the stock appreciation.
  • If you have a good idea and can show its value to leadership, there's a decent chance they'll let you build it (not a lot of red tape).
  • Good internal tooling makes it easy to get new applications up and running (try to be on a team that works on decoupled apps rather than the monolith).
  • I started my career here and am super thankful they let me grow and learn from my mistakes.
Cons
  • Management can be spread thin, and not all seem invested in the career development of their directs.

  • Promotions are heavily based on having led high-impact projects. If your team doesn't have any of those during a review cycle, it will be difficult to get promoted. There's not a lot of recognition for consistent, high-quality technical contributions.

  • Wayfair does not have many experienced engineers, so it can be difficult to find people to learn from. They are trying to hire experienced engineers now to improve the situation.

  • Lots of reorgs happen. New senior leadership is often brought in and makes decisions that are out of touch and hard to understand.

Advice to Management

When new leadership is brought in, have them consult with people on the front lines before making sweeping decisions.

Keep hiring experienced engineers, but also provide training to management so they know how to develop talent and promote from within.
