Firmware Internship Interview Experience - United States

Process

The process took around 1.5 months, starting from the code screening test to receiving an offer. It included the following steps:

  • A 120-minute online code test
  • Phone screening
  • Two 1-hour code interviews with firmware engineers
  • A final interview with the firmware manager

Overall, the process was very enjoyable and pretty stress-free. Everybody was super friendly and happy to answer any questions I had. Being new to the pressure of coding interviews, I made plenty of syntax errors and 'stupid' mistakes, which they pointed out without being harsh.

The scope of the coding interviews was implementing commonly found data structures and algorithms in embedded systems, then writing test cases for the code you wrote. This usually took up the first ~45 minutes and was followed by more conceptual questions for ~15 minutes.

Questions

Write a simple function that does a particular mathematical operation. Think about corner cases and implement tests.

Write the logic pertaining to a pretty commonly found data structure. Again, think about corner cases and implement tests.

How would you design a system from scratch, and how would you go about debugging and verifying the system.
