Description For Materials Engineer | Adhesives

At Apple, carefully engineered, quality materials are essential to the way our products look, perform, and feel to our customers. The Materials Engineering Product Design team is dedicated to developing and integrating novel materials that empower innovative designs across all Apple product lines. They are seeking an accomplished Materials Engineer with expertise in adhesives to help take Apple products to the next level.

In this critical role, you will play a key part in providing Apple customers with the best possible user experience by driving the development and deployment of new, innovative adhesive technologies. These technologies include impact-resistant, reworkable, bio-based, and debond-on-demand adhesives. You will be heavily engaged in adhesive development, recommendation, interface optimization for adhesion, material characterization, application process support, and failure analysis.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Spearheading projects involving viscoelastic materials, PSAs, tapes, reactive film adhesives, and primer adhesive technologies
  • Optimizing surfaces for adhesion and performing adhesive failure analysis (bulk and interfacial)
  • Managing complex development programs with overseas vendors
  • Impacting world-renowned Apple products like iPad, MacBook, and future innovations

Required Qualifications:

  • MS in chemistry, or BS in chemical engineering or polymer science, with 5+ years relevant adhesives industry experience
  • Excellent verbal, presentation, written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally (~10%)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in Chemistry; MS or PhD in chemical engineering or polymer science with 5+ years relevant adhesives industry experience
  • Track record of adhesive selection and development for products with demanding performance requirements and tight schedules
  • Prior experience in adhesive development, application, characterization, and understanding structure-property relationships
  • Proficiency in optimizing surfaces for adhesion and adhesive failure analysis (bulk and interfacial)
  • Familiarity with finite element analysis simulation to assess the robustness of new product design
  • Experience in managing complex development programs with overseas vendors
