Description For Research Engineer (Internship/Co-Op)

Crater is revolutionizing email management with their next-generation email client that leverages AI to predict user actions and reading preferences. As a Research Engineer Intern, you'll join a small, talent-dense team of less than 8 people working on cutting-edge email ranking algorithms and hybrid search improvements.

The role offers a unique opportunity to work directly with founders and technical leadership on either the "intuitive inbox" ranking algorithm or the Central RLHF loop on hybrid search. You'll be immersed in eval-driven development, experimentation, and testing in production environments. This position is perfect for students who combine technical prowess with user-centric thinking.

The internship is based in San Francisco's North Beach area, with comprehensive benefits including covered housing, transportation, and meals. You'll be working 6 days a week in an engineering-first culture that values practical implementation of machine learning and search algorithms. The annualized compensation ranges from $120,000 to $150,000 (prorated for the 4-month duration).

This is an exceptional opportunity for ambitious students interested in the intersection of AI, user experience, and email technology. You'll contribute to Crater's vision of using email ranking as a proxy for understanding user preferences, while helping build an interface for managing "agents" that improve people's lives. The small team size ensures significant exposure to all aspects of recommendations, search, and product development.
