Description For Experimental Physicist

D-Wave Systems, a leader in quantum computing, is seeking an Experimental Physicist to join their Processor Development (PD) team in Burnaby, BC. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work at the forefront of quantum computing technology.

As an Experimental Physicist, you'll be part of a multi-disciplinary team pushing the boundaries of superconducting quantum processors. Your responsibilities will include characterizing and reducing noise in superconducting circuits, modeling and improving quantum processor performance, and developing novel devices to enhance capabilities.

Key aspects of the role include:

  • Developing experimental procedures for superconducting devices
  • Creating theoretical models and simulations
  • Analyzing complex data from large systems of superconducting devices
  • Contributing to software infrastructure for processor operation
  • Collaborating across teams, from marketing to engineering

The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. or M.Sc. in physics (or related field) with strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Experience in quantum information, superconducting devices, or device physics is highly valued. You should be comfortable with software development for experimental design, data acquisition, and analysis.

Responsibilities For Experimental Physicist

  • Develop and execute experimental procedures to quantify, understand, and operate superconducting devices
  • Come up with new ideas to improve processor operation or performance
  • Develop theoretical models and simulations
  • Develop analysis routines to fit theoretical models to data
  • Document experimental results
  • Create and contribute to software infrastructure for modeling, calibrating and operating processors
  • Communicate and collaborate with other internal teams

Requirements For Experimental Physicist

Python
  • Ph.D. or M.Sc. in physics or a related discipline, or equivalent experimental research experience
  • Strong critical thinking and technical problem solving skills
  • Skill in independent research and evidence of deep understanding in your area of expertise
  • Strong software development experience related to experimental design and automation, data acquisition, and data analysis
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to adapt to shifting priorities in a time-sensitive environment
