Disney Entertainment & ESPN Technology is seeking a Senior Database Engineer - SQL to join their Data Stores team. This role involves building and maintaining highly available relational database systems across multiple cloud and on-premise environments, supporting DE&ET's digital media supply chain and consumer-facing products. The ideal candidate will apply software engineering principles to database engineering and administration, focusing on process and automation development to deliver infrastructure faster, safer, and more consistently.
Key Responsibilities:
- Build, deploy, and ensure 24/7/365 availability of DE&ET database infrastructure
- Leverage software development and automation for database infrastructure design and modernization
- Participate in setting architectural direction for database platforms and projects
- Manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Analyze, design, and deploy fault-tolerant, distributed, and highly available database infrastructure
- Proactively plan and implement infrastructure changes
- Provide database expertise through performance tuning, troubleshooting, and administration
- Develop automation and tooling to increase operational efficiency
- Build scalable, resilient, and recoverable infrastructure through code and configuration management
- Provide insights on data store infrastructure through metrics, monitoring, and alerting
- Maintain thorough documentation
- Participate in live event support and on-call rotation
- May provide oversight to junior team members
Required Qualifications:
- 5+ years of experience with Microsoft SQL Server, Amazon RDS for SQL Server, Azure SQL, and Azure SQL MI
- Fundamental understanding of Microsoft SQL Server database internals
- Experience with Agile software development and source control management tools
- Intermediate to advanced expertise in programming languages like Python, Java, or Go
- Understanding of Windows operating system, network, and containers
- Excellent communication skills
- Experience with fault-tolerant, distributed, and highly available database infrastructure
- Proficiency in database monitoring, backup, restore, and recovery strategies
- Experience with SQL Server patching and upgrades
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in database reliability engineering (DRE) or systems reliability engineering (SRE)
- Experience with Azure and Amazon Web Services
- Knowledge of infrastructure as code (Terraform, CloudFormation)
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and configuration management
- Familiarity with SQL Server Always On availability groups
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field and 5+ years relevant experience
