Description For Software Engineering Manager II, Infrastructure, Google Cloud Storage

Google is seeking a Software Engineering Manager II for their Infrastructure team, specifically for Google Cloud Storage. This role is critical in leading the actionable reliability team, which is responsible for improving the reliability of the GCS serving stack. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in software development, technical leadership, and experience with large-scale infrastructure or distributed systems.

Key responsibilities include:

  1. Setting and communicating team priorities aligned with broader organizational goals.
  2. Managing and developing team members, providing regular feedback and coaching.
  3. Developing mid-term technical vision and roadmap for multiple teams.
  4. Designing and guiding systems within the broader area, and contributing to code development.
  5. Reviewing code and ensuring best practices are followed.

The role requires a minimum of a Bachelor's degree (or equivalent experience), 5 years of software development experience, 3 years in a technical leadership role (including 2 years of people management), and 3 years of experience with large-scale infrastructure or distributed systems.

Google Cloud Storage is a highly scalable, distributed Object Store. The actionable reliability team focuses on improving the reliability of the GCS serving stack, including accurate measurement of stack health, designing mechanisms to discover production issues, building attribution frameworks, and optimizing call patterns between serving components.

  • Set and communicate team priorities that support the broader organization's goals. Align strategy, processes, and decision-making across teams
  • Set clear expectations with individuals based on their level and role and aligned to the broader organization's goals. Meet regularly with individuals to discuss performance and development and provide feedback and coaching
  • Develop the mid-term technical vision and roadmap within the scope of your (often multiple) team(s). Evolve the roadmap to meet anticipated future requirements and infrastructure needs
  • Design, guide and vet systems designs within the scope of the broader area, and write product or system development code to solve ambiguous problems
  • Review code developed by other engineers and provide feedback to ensure best practices (e.g., style guidelines, checking code in, accuracy, testability, and efficiency)
