Description For Staff Software Engineer, Site Reliability Engineering

Google Cloud is seeking a Staff Software Engineer for their Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) team. This role combines software and systems engineering to build and run large-scale, massively distributed, fault-tolerant systems. As an SRE, you'll ensure that Google Cloud's services have reliability and uptime appropriate to customer needs, while maintaining a fast rate of improvement.

Your responsibilities will include:

  1. Engaging in the full lifecycle of services from design to deployment and refinement.
  2. Supporting services pre-launch through system design consulting, software platform development, and capacity planning.
  3. Maintaining live services by monitoring availability, latency, and overall system health.
  4. Scaling systems sustainably through automation and evolving systems to improve reliability and velocity.
  5. Practicing sustainable incident response and blameless postmortems.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience
  • 8 years of experience with data structures and algorithms
  • 5 years of software development experience
  • 3 years of experience leading projects and designing distributed systems
  • Experience in computing, distributed systems, storage, or networking
  • Knowledge of network security concepts
  • A systematic problem-solving approach and effective communication skills

  • Support services before they go live through activities such as system design consulting, developing software platforms and frameworks, capacity planning and launch reviews
  • Maintain services once they are live by measuring and monitoring availability, latency and overall system health
  • Scale systems sustainably through mechanisms like automation, and evolve systems by pushing for changes that improve reliability and velocity
  • Practice sustainable incident response and blameless postmortems

Linux
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent practical experience
  • 8 years of experience with data structures or algorithms
  • 5 years of experience with software development in one or more programming languages
  • 3 years of experience leading projects and designing, analyzing, and troubleshooting distributed systems
  • Experience working in computing, distributed systems, storage, or networking
  • Experience with network security concepts (such as DDoS protection)
  • Experience in designing, analyzing, and troubleshooting large-scale distributed systems
  • Systematic problem-solving approach, coupled with effective communication skills
