HRL Laboratories is seeking a talented NLP Research Engineer Intern for a 5-month full-time position from August - December 2025, with potential extension into spring 2026. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work at the forefront of Natural Language Processing and AI research.
The position is based in Calabasas, CA, and requires candidates to be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. As an intern, you'll be immersed in cutting-edge NLP research, working with state-of-the-art techniques in Natural Language Processing, Generative AI, and Large Language Models. The role combines theoretical research with practical applications, offering a comprehensive learning experience in both academic and industrial settings.
Your responsibilities will span from conducting advanced research to implementing practical solutions. You'll be involved in designing and optimizing NLP models, working with various tasks including semantic understanding, knowledge extraction, and tool-augmented reasoning. The role also emphasizes hands-on experience with data preprocessing, model deployment, and system optimization.
The ideal candidate should be pursuing or holding an advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in a relevant technical field and possess strong programming skills, particularly in Python. Knowledge of modern ML frameworks and NLP libraries is essential. The position offers competitive compensation ranging from $52 to $60 per hour.

Responsibilities For NLP Research Engineer Intern
- Conduct advanced research in Natural Language Processing, Generative AI, and Large Language Models
- Design, develop, and optimize NLP models and algorithms
- Collect, clean, and preprocess textual and multimodal data
- Contribute to development of scalable, production-ready NLP systems
- Evaluate and refine existing NLP systems
- Experiment with modern frameworks and state-of-the-art foundation models
- Participate in internal research reviews, code walkthroughs, and ideation sessions
Requirements For NLP Research Engineer Intern
- U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status required
- Pursuing or holding an M.S. or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Machine Learning, AI, Computational Linguistics, Applied Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, or related field
- Must be enrolled in an educational program
- Solid grasp of NLP fundamentals, including both classical and modern techniques
- Proficient in Python and familiar with ML frameworks such as PyTorch, JAX
- Experience with NLP libraries like HuggingFace Transformers, spaCy, OpenNLP
- Familiarity with prompt engineering, RAG, and fine-tuning techniques for LLMs
- Understanding of contemporary architectures
- Strong collaboration, communication, and documentation skills
