Description For Senior Site Reliability Engineer

ING, a leading global financial institution with 60,000 employees across 40 countries, is seeking a Senior Site Reliability Engineer to join their IT Resilience, Risk and Security tribe within the Engineering & Reliability domain. This role is part of the Center of Expertise (CoE) Local SRE team, which is crucial in maintaining the reliability, scalability, and performance of ING's engineering systems.

The position combines software engineering expertise with reliability engineering, focusing on improving platform reliability and reducing operational burden. You'll work with modern technologies including Kubernetes, cloud-native architectures, and various observability tools. The role involves designing scalable solutions, optimizing CI/CD pipelines, and implementing SRE best practices.

As part of a team consisting of one SRE Lead and two Senior SREs based in the Netherlands, you'll collaborate closely with ING's global SRE organization and Global Process Owners. Responsibilities For Senior Site Reliability Engineer

  • Design and build scalable, reliable software solutions and roll out new resilience features
  • Setup internal tools and frameworks for observability, incident response, and automation
  • Optimize CI/CD pipelines and deployment patterns (VMs, containers, Kubernetes)
  • Define and monitor Service Level Objectives (SLOs)
  • Conduct Well-Architected Reviews and observability assessments
  • Improve incident response and post-mortem practices
  • Eliminate manual work (toil) through automation
  • Coach DevOps teams on SRE and software engineering best practices
  • Initiate SRE initiatives such as AI Ops, Chaos Engineering, cloud migrations, and Error Budgeting
  • Actively participate in Root Cause Analyses and follow up on improvement actions

Requirements For Senior Site Reliability Engineer

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field
  • 5+ years of experience in software engineering and/or SRE
  • Proficiency in modern programming/Scripting languages such as Python, Go, Ruby, Java, Bash or PowerShell
  • Experience with CI/CD tooling (Azure DevOps, OnePipeline)
  • Deep knowledge of cloud-native architectures, Kubernetes, and container platforms (OpenShift, AKS)
  • Experience with observability tools such as ELK, Prometheus, Kafka, Splunk
  • Understanding of ITSM processes and Agile ways of working
  • Solid understanding of service level objectives like Availability, MTTR, and MTBF
  • Good understanding of microservices architecture and high availability patterns
  • Proven experience as a Site Reliability Engineer or DevOps engineer
  • Strong analytical skills and a proactive mindset
  • Experience coaching and mentoring engineering teams
  • Excellent oral and written English skills
