Description For Mechanical Design Engineer, Closures Architect

Tesla is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer, Closures Architect to join their New Programs Engineering team. This role is at the forefront of vehicle design and development, working in an iterative environment to study, simulate, build, and prove Tesla's future vehicle design concepts. The position requires frequent interaction with Design and Vehicle Engineering teams, particularly with Interior, Exterior, Body-in-White, and Closures Systems cross-functional partners.

As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you'll be responsible for developing closures designs from initial concepts through to design & release of prototype level components and systems that represent future production vehicles. You'll work on closures geometric architecture development using CATIA parametric design, establish system architecture and functional feasibility, and support the creation of component specifications and technical design documents.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing closures designs from concepts to prototype level
  • Creating CATIA parametric designs for various vehicle components
  • Resolving feasibility issues with the Design Studio team
  • Analyzing concepts through simulation and physical prototype builds
  • Ensuring product conformity to market regulations
  • Supporting vehicle milestones and production launch
  • Innovating and improving processes continuously

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant industrial design and engineering experience
  • Proficiency in CAD software using parametric elements
  • Ability to interpret CAE results and integrate recommendations into product designs
  • Experience with automotive closures systems and prototyping
  • Knowledge of vehicle NVH as it relates to closures systems

Responsibilities For Mechanical Design Engineer, Closures Architect

  • Develop closures designs from initial concepts through to design & release of prototype level components and systems
  • Closures Geometric Architecture Development using CATIA parametric design
  • Establish system architecture and functional feasibility
  • Support the creation of component specifications, component DFMEA, and other technical design documents
  • Resolve feasibility issues with the Design Studio team
  • Analyze concepts through both simulation and physical prototype builds
  • Ensure product conforms to all market regulations governing assigned systems
  • Support vehicle milestones including prototype, pre-production, and production build events
  • Help deliver world-class craftsmanship, fit/finish and support for successful production launch
  • Innovate, develop, and improve processes continuously

Requirements For Mechanical Design Engineer, Closures Architect

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant industrial design and engineering experience
  • Proficiency in CAD software using parametric elements and knowledge-based engineering tools
  • Ability to interpret CAE results and integrate recommendations into product designs
  • Must be proactive in improving processes and driving projects
  • Experience with automotive closures systems and prototyping of seals and other closures components
  • Capability to run FEA at part and system level
  • Knowledge of vehicle NVH as it related to closures systems
  • Knowledge of relevant manufacturing processes for production and prototype (elastomers, composites, sheet metal)
