When someone asks this as the follow up do I just mention how I decomposed the problem, communicated changes and plans proactively, before it turns into a blocker or a nasty surprise at the end?
Idk my logic tells me that hitting a date is not at all gonna convince this interviewer? Did I actually deal with so much rework but I still “hit” the deadline?
This is especially true as in our team we’d much rather have something take longer but it is done right which is what this platform endorses lol. Our deadlines aren’t fixed deadlines as long as something is scoped clearly.
I would be very clear and honest, just state things as they were, the question seems to assess your ability to deliver tasks, but it also assesses things like how you overcome obstacles, how you communicate progress to stakeholders, etc...
So, just being clear and direct helps you and the interviewer, not every questions is bombed with hidden targets.
As I talk about in my behavioral interview course, there's no such thing as a right answer for a behavioral question. What matters is your ability to present a narrative with conviction while defending your choices with an open mind.
If your team values quality over velocity, mention that. That's a good engineering cultural value that most top tech companies have. If your team really cares about quality, they should be making deadlines more conservative to match that anyways, so you aren't missing them.
