Building side projects: mobile apps even if my role is web (FE/BE)?

This is a question from the course: Building side projects.

I wonder if having successful side mobile apps projects could lead to mobile development related opportunities, even though my background and desirable path is within the web development stack (front-end, back-end).

And what do you think about using frameworks like React Native instead of native languages?

I think the building stuff people love mindset is what matters more (replicable in any other tech stack).

But I would like to know what do you think.

I am still seeing the course, but so good so far, thanks Alex for sharing your knowledge!

Forgot to mention: I'm not a huge fan of React Native: Android (Kotlin) vs. React Native

If your goal is to build something purely to get something out into the world, cross-platform makes sense. But if you want to parlay side project experience into a real job someday, native is better.

It definitely can as I'm living proof of it. I went to Course Hero as their Android lead with only side projects under my belt. Back at PayPal, I was a Java back-end developer.

However, your case is different from mine as you're a senior engineer already. I was still junior when I joined Course Hero (just did 1 year at PayPal as my sole work experience). I recommend sticking with web unless you don't like it and are looking for a switch.

Being front-end overall is better for side projects as you are closer to the user interface. On web, you also get the immense power of SEO, making your ceiling higher (though the floor is admittedly lower): https://www.jointaro.com/course/build-side-projects-with-500k-users-shipping-and-growing/seo/

And yes, just build stuff people love at the end of the day 😁

      Thanks for answering!

I want to keep in web development for now, probably I can build simple tools without relying in a BE or a DB, which is more challenging than mobile since there you can use SQLite, and proof data like installations, rating, etc.

But having limitations is always an opportunity to improve our creativity.

Maybe I will try mobile because I am curious about lynx
