I'd like to get into some contract work on the side. I'm a mid-level engineer at a FAANG-tier company, but I'd like to start building projects and coding outside work (want to get to the point where I enjoy building stuff).
I'd like to work with contracting instead of side projects, since I think the external deadlines will help me stay motivated. I'd like to make at least half of my hourly rate right now - so about $100/hr.
How would you recommend I find clients / contracting projects?
Dang, you make $400k as a FAANG mid-level? Congrats.

There's a lot of websites out there that pair talent with clients. Here's one I've gotten so many ads for: https://gun.io/
I'm surprised you have meaningful spare time outside of work though if you work at a FAANG-level company 😯.
It’s a bit less (roughly $350k) but yeah I’ve been incredibly fortunate / lucky with that.
Thanks for the resource! I’ll give it a look
Yeah that’s fair, luckily WLB is pretty good for me (so long as I don’t push myself too much). I definitely feel that I’m in more of a “wanting to work more phase” of life, so I’d like to build skills on projects that my job doesn’t help with honing as much.
If you allow me, I will question the importance you're giving the financial outcome.
You are already a very well-paid engineer making $350K/year. Let's say you find a contracting gig that pays $100/hour and you can do it for 10 hours/week. Let's assume you get $30K/year total, since the work will likely be inconsistent.
Will the $30K of additional income make a meaningful difference to your quality of life? Will it greatly accelerate your savings goals? Probably not, since it's < 10% of your TC.
What is a better way to spend your time? In my opinion:
In the short term, the above paths will obviously lead to "leaving money on the table." But it is the long-term optimal strategy, both for compensation and for an exciting career.
Good luck 🫡 please share what you build!
