Aligning FAANG interview retakes and first time tries in April.

I know proactive job searching is key, can this be extended to saying hey next month there might be activity let’s apply to jobs and take recruiter calls if I get a callback

and let them know to reach out again in 8 months for me to get my resume in the door and align my onsite interviews to that target April date? Or do you think there’s a better way to go about this?

So my plan I thought was a good idea was to apply to jobs when there’s a lot of activity and delay it if it is a faang plus company. I heard next month there might be a lot of activity. This is why I’m asking this question. I’m just not sure if delaying this until January makes more sense due to undertainty in the market.

I have 3 retakes I am eyeing via strong referrals and warm recruiter contacts and those will be the ones I prioritize for April.

However, I heard that you need way more than 3 faang interviews in a single time period to have a chance of passing due to the focused preparation you’re embarking on so the idea was to be proactive and align more than those 3 potential retakes in the same period by applying to jobs and asking if I can align the dates.

The idea would also be to use the period before April to interview to practice elsewhere and get stronger behavioral stories before that time period but ya that’s the thought I am having.

Also for even more context I want to align full loops in April. So I guess the plan could be I try to do screens in the winter timeframe as an option.

In this market, it is indeed likely you'll need more than 3 FAANG-level interviews to get one offer, especially if you haven't worked at a FAANG/FAANG-adjacent company before.

That's all the more reason to start interviewing now to get practice in. Amp up your interview rapport to make those 3 chances likely to convert. I would just start applying now.

Overall I recommend not overthinking the job search, especially now. It is very hard to predict what will happen, so you can only plan so much. After tidying up your resume, just apply to a lot of places and take the interviews as they come.

Got it. I’m also not desperate to leave because my current job is literally increasing team headcount and we’re trusted with big projects. I would need a promo offer or faang to consider leaving in this situation. Otherwise I’d be okay getting promoted here itself lol. It’s more of a let’s not waste opportunities and be more proactive with what I have.

I'm confused: Is your plan to reach out to FAANG recruiters to keep the relationship warm and if they respond, you ask them to reach out again/set up the interview 8 months from now? Or are you referring to applying to non-FAANG companies?

In general, asking someone to reach out again in 8 months is kind of weird, especially if you want to set up an interview. It's so far out, and the recruiter has a high chance of literally not being employed at the company anymore by then (recruiter churn tends to be pretty high).

I recommend just doing a bunch of non-FAANG interviews ASAP to get practice: https://www.jointaro.com/course/ace-your-tech-interview-and-get-a-job-as-a-software-engineer/order-matters/
