What happens to information I put into public LLMs?

Scenario 1: If I share personally identifiable information about myself in great detail, could another user access that or how is my privacy protected?

Scenario 2: If I'm working on a project that could compete with a Microsoft or OpenAi ML project, and I put a data set I’m using into chatgpt and share details about what/how I’m doing stuff, do you think they would bother with flagging something if it was potentially useful for themselves? I was also curious about this so I looked at the OpenAI help page. Relevant snippets:

We may use content submitted to ChatGPT, DALL·E, and our other services for individuals to improve model performance.

In addition, OpenAI may share info with 3rd parties:

We share content with a select group of trusted service providers that help us provide our services. We share the minimum amount of content we need in order to accomplish this purpose and our service providers are subject to strict confidentiality and security obligations.

My conclusion: you should assume any proprietary data or PII that you share could be used and/or regurgitated in some future version of the model.

It's possible - The AI researcher papers on how to get ChatGPT and other AI tools to leak data are scary.

In general, never assume that your privacy will be protected with any digital tool you use. It's in the best interest of tech companies, especially Big Tech, to vacuum up as much data as possible. And unfortunately, governments are too slow and old to regulate them properly.

Tech companies aren't exactly the best at respecting the intellectual property of others -A huge portion of the industry is centered around "recycling" ideas from others. Again, be careful.
