Received promotion but low salary increase

Recently got promoted from SDE1 to SDE2. I was already in the lower range of the SDE1 salary, and was hoping the promotion will change this. However I only got a 10% raise, putting me on a much lower range in comparison with salaries of other SDE2s in the company. I didn't really get a chance to negotiate promotion here and not sure what would've been the best way to go about it.

Is the best move for me to just switch companies? Should I stay in the role longer so that I can interview for SDE2 positions with more YOE? Is it worth to bring up data about co-worker salaries and trying to negotiate a salary increase using that?

I talk about a few tips to negotiate your current salary in the course:

    • Time when you ask to coincide when your company normally does pay evaluations and merit increases
    • Share market data or another offer

If a higher salary is important to you, your best bet is to likely to switch companies. I'd recommend getting another offer and then present the higher salary to your manager. Since you're considering taking the offer anyway, you'll win no matter what: either switch to a higher-paying job or get Circle to pay you more.

If you want to stay at the company,

I would bring it up with your manager during your next 1:1 and start making a plan with them about how to get into the higher range for your position. The conversation will usually involve how you can operate at a level where you are exceeding expectations for your current position.

One issue is that this is not guaranteed, so you could potentially waste a year operating at a higher level, but not reap any rewards.

If you are okay with leaving the company,

I would interview externally because it will give you a good sense of your value outside of your current company. You can compare your current compensation to your offers and find out if you are being undervalued. This is probably a good exercise to do in general if you are truly trying to maximize compensation.
