## Data knowledge for engineers:
- Data science is an overloaded term. The high-level goal for anyone working with data is to surface insights that will inform decisions. 
- Being insightful isn’t enough -- you need to surface **actionable** and **causal** relationships.

## Career growth
- At the most senior levels, leaders are business owners/product leaders, not functional leaders.

Career success comes from being deliberate:
- A career is a series of decisions
- These decisions come with tradeoffs
- Those best at navigating tradeoffs emerge as leaders
- "Deliberate" means that you are both intentional and calculated

System Design Series: Taro Playlists [Part 7] - How Can Things REALLY Break?

The tactics are covered in the system design doc, so this summary will focus on the "meta" context behind this part and additional commentary:

- You should *always* think about "How can we cause a SEV?" when you're planning out system design for any substantial project or task.
  - **Context:** SEV = Severity, which is the term Meta, Robinhood, and many other companies use to describe a really bad product event.
  - This is one of the purest and most critical manifestations of proactive thinking, which is one of the trademark attributes of a competent senior+ engineer and tech lead. SEVs are events that seriously set back your organization or even your entire company if they're something you have to react to as opposed to catching them early.
- This "anti-SEV" thinking is *especially* relevant for Big Tech where the stakes are much holder due to regulatory constraints, increased media presence, and a massive scale of users.
  - It's also far harder to do this well at Big Tech due to a greater range of ways things can break.
  - However, if you can do this well, you will add a tremendous amount of value to your team. This is why pretty much all senior and staff engineers at FAANG and FAANG-equivalent companies have really developed this skill.
- Here are the ways a SEV can happen from the video (these are all vectors Alex dealt with at Meta as well):
  - **Users not playing nice** - You should never assume that users will put in proper inputs or even not want to harm other users. Most major tech products have some sort of multiplayer component, so it's important to be vigilant here.
  - **Bad auth context** - This means that users are able to carry out actions on behalf of other users. This can happen either intentionally (i.e. the acting user is malicious) or accidentally (e.g. the user has multiple accounts on your service and switching between them cleanly is broken).
  - **Incorrect backporting** - "Backporting" is the process of making things work on older builds of your software. This is *very* relevant for mobile engineers as there will always be a good amount of users on older builds, especially if your product is used by people in regions with lower internet.

Onboarding Tips For Senior+ Engineers

As a Senior Engineer (or Staff or Principal) coming into a new company, there will be some expectation that you are bringing in domain knowledge. Your opinion can be valuable. A few ways to have immediate impact:

- Contrast how your current company operates compared to past companies
- Ask questions about why certain processes exist or don't exist

As you ramp up, remember to "**respect what came before.**" You don't want to disparage existing systems without realizing that it was best designed at the time of construction with the constraints and knowledge *at the time*.

As a senior engineer, you also need to lay the foundation for team and org-level impact. This means you invest extra time in building relationships and meeting other senior/staff/principal engineers.

Ask For Specific Feedback

Key to learning quickly is getting effective feedback. This is especially important while onboarding, so you are able to course correct rapidly. Instead of asking the lazy question "Do you have any feedback for me?" add structure around the question: 

- **Task-specific** - what’s one thing that would have made this stronger?
- **Behavioral** - what’s something I do well that I should do more of?
- **Meta-level** - what’s the best way for us to share feedback with one another

Once you've been working with someone for a few weeks, schedule a dedicated 1:1 for feedback and let them know you'd love their honest opinion.

Get Maximum Value Per Answer

You should "Learn how to fish" instead of "receiving fish" — your goal in onboarding is to become a self-sufficient, productive engineer as quickly as possible. 

The way you do that is to ask follow-up questions when you get help and understand how you would have arrived at the solution on your own.

Bias toward asking for help earlier when you're new to a company, since you don't know what you don't know. It's better to be more annoying for the first month on the job rather than somewhat annoying for 6 months.

Your Onboarding Buddy

An onboarding buddy is someone who can help you adjust to cultural norms and direct your questions as a "catch-all." In addition to answering basic technical questions around workflow or code, the onboarding buddy is effectively lending their social capital to you to get you started. They are the safety net when you don't know who else to turn to. 

Rahul recommends that the onboarding buddy and manager be two different people. Your manager relationship contains a power dynamic in that you're interacting your boss, so you may not be fully vulnerable with them. The onboarding buddy is closer to a peer, which means you can get the help you need.

One of the most important roles for the onboarding buddy is to help you **figure out your support channels.**

- **Most important skill**: dealing with ambiguity and working through others. Senior Staff Engineers operate in a broad space, so they have to be independent enough to make impact without a specific problem.

Do This To Get Maximum Value From Your Manager 1 on 1s

The manager 1 on 1 meeting is arguably the most sacred and high-leverage time you have in your career. Make sure you don't waste it by stumbling in with 0 preparation.

- **Come in with a plan** - In your running meeting notes doc, write down the agenda beforehand with discussion points ordered by priority.
