Software Engineering Vs School -- What's the Difference?

A core confusion for many new Computer Science graduates who land a role as an engineer is that **their job is only partially about coding**. Edsger Dijkstra once said:

> Computer science is no more about computers than astronomy is about telescopes.

A software engineer is much more than a computer programmer. You're a point of contact for your team, and you better get used to working with tons of other... humans.

System Design Series: Taro Playlists [Part 7] - How Can Things REALLY Break?

The tactics are covered in the system design doc, so this summary will focus on the "meta" context behind this part and additional commentary:

- You should *always* think about "How can we cause a SEV?" when you're planning out system design for any substantial project or task.
  - **Context:** SEV = Severity, which is the term Meta, Robinhood, and many other companies use to describe a really bad product event.
  - This is one of the purest and most critical manifestations of proactive thinking, which is one of the trademark attributes of a competent senior+ engineer and tech lead. SEVs are events that seriously set back your organization or even your entire company if they're something you have to react to as opposed to catching them early.
- This "anti-SEV" thinking is *especially* relevant for Big Tech where the stakes are much holder due to regulatory constraints, increased media presence, and a massive scale of users.
  - It's also far harder to do this well at Big Tech due to a greater range of ways things can break.
  - However, if you can do this well, you will add a tremendous amount of value to your team. This is why pretty much all senior and staff engineers at FAANG and FAANG-equivalent companies have really developed this skill.
- Here are the ways a SEV can happen from the video (these are all vectors Alex dealt with at Meta as well):
  - **Users not playing nice** - You should never assume that users will put in proper inputs or even not want to harm other users. Most major tech products have some sort of multiplayer component, so it's important to be vigilant here.
  - **Bad auth context** - This means that users are able to carry out actions on behalf of other users. This can happen either intentionally (i.e. the acting user is malicious) or accidentally (e.g. the user has multiple accounts on your service and switching between them cleanly is broken).
  - **Incorrect backporting** - "Backporting" is the process of making things work on older builds of your software. This is *very* relevant for mobile engineers as there will always be a good amount of users on older builds, especially if your product is used by people in regions with lower internet.

How To Handle Hints In A Software Engineer Interview Without Failing

The best software engineer interview performances feel like a collaborative experience between the interview candidate and the interviewer. If an interview is going well, you will be supporting them as the interviewer and maybe giving hints. However, both sides need to be careful about how this happens.

Here are the core points from the video:
- Giving hints is tricky. There are some situations where it's good and some where it's bad.
- In general, you should lean towards giving less hints as an interviewer to maximize the signal you get.
- *Don't give hints when the candidate is desperately fishing, and they have no idea how to solve the problem.*
  - **Fishing example**: "Can we use a binary tree for this?" (they didn't explain their thought process at all prior to asking)
- Fishing questions like the one above are tricky as you can't answer them normally:
  - **If you say "Yes":** You reveal the core pattern behind the problem, solving way too much of the problem for the candidate. At this point, they have failed the question.
  - **If you say "No":** The candidate is one step closer to the core solution via process of elimination. This sets them up to keep fishing until you say "Yes".
- When the candidate is fishing, say something like, *"How do you feel about it? If it makes sense, we can try building it out."* Flip the question back to them and push them to think through it more.
- Give hints to bridge small gaps. If the candidate is 90%+ of the way there, just give them the hint so everyone can move on.
  - A common scenario here is that the candidate has almost all of the solution working minus some trivial 1-liner. You are losing signal by having them struggle on this trivial piece and not working on other, larger problems. In this case, just give them the 1-liner.

Job Switching Is Great For Pay But With Major Caveats

This video segment explores **job switching as a strategy to increase compensation**, acknowledging its significant financial benefits while outlining important limitations. It offers a balanced view of when and how to leverage this option effectively within a career in tech.

- **Job switching can deliver major pay increases**, especially when moving from lower-paying companies to top-tier tech firms like Facebook, Google, or Airbnb. Offers from these companies often represent a different compensation tier altogether.
- **The current tech market is highly competitive**, driven by remote work and talent shortages, which makes switching jobs particularly lucrative for engineers not already paid at “top of market” rates.
- **However, job switching comes with diminishing returns**. Frequent transitions (e.g., every 6–12 months) can raise red flags for recruiters due to high costs of hiring and onboarding, making a two-year tenure the informal minimum standard.
- **Banding limits how much pay can increase** through switching if already working at top-tier firms. For example, a mid-level engineer will only be offered a similarly banded role and compensation elsewhere.
- **Job switching doesn’t contribute to actual growth as an engineer**. Preparing for interviews (e.g., Leetcode) is time-consuming and doesn’t improve the long-term skills needed to succeed or progress to leadership roles like principal engineer.
