The manager will gaslight you if you are not the favorite. Promotion is predetermined 80% of the time, and only the favorite gets the promotion. Management is clueless and shady in its decision-making.
Please stop favoring people you like for promotion. The project will never grow when you keep putting people with poor skillsets in leadership positions.
