I then had an in-person interview. During the process, I was informed they were already considering hiring internally.

I felt like a checkbox: "Did you interview anyone external to the company?"

Oddly, I was even interviewed by the person who wanted the job I was applying for.

All feedback during the in-person process was positive, including the whiteboarding of pseudocode, which went really well. I was very disappointed when I received the call that they decided to go with the internal candidate.
