Pros
  • Freedom to make things happen.
  • No micromanagement.
  • Easy to succeed if you are self-motivated, can see things that need doing, and just get on with it.
  • Super supportive co-workers.
  • Time allowed for personal development (imperative in the technology/cloud space).
  • Seriously the best, most engaging, and exciting place I've ever worked.
Cons
  • Culture of 'figure it out for yourself' and self-help can lead to lengthy delays if you've not done it before.
  • Employees can use 'customer obsession' as a big stick to escalate.
  • Internal support processes for HR, etc., are painful to find or get in touch with a human.
  • Competing priorities between teams make it difficult to get a coherent approach.
  • Immediate support largely depends on your immediate manager (and their network). If you don't get on with them, it can be a more difficult experience.
Advice to Management

The company needs unified global reporting and processes in place and to stop being so 'scrappy' to better compete, especially as the competitive landscape continues to become more demanding, rather than using the 'day 1 approach' as an excuse. Otherwise, competitors that have more mature processes and compete wisely will continue to steal market share while Amazon continues to struggle to get out of its own way.
