The interview process was good. The interviewers were very respectful. However, because the position was out of my area of expertise, I was declined. I am still actively learning Python and trying to answer the questions asked to gauge my skill level.

Fun Intern Program, Interesting Project

Pros: American Express obviously impacts a lot of people, and the work is undoubtedly important in that sense. The technology group is large, with many opportunities over different stacks and products. The intern program is very good, with plenty of fun and an effort always made to keep the interns engaged. Many managers do an excellent job of listening to their employees and keeping them interested.
Cons: The technology itself is outdated and not very exciting to work on, although this seems to be changing slowly. At any large corporation, it is difficult to feel that your work specifically is impactful.

Pros: I had a mentor who challenged me and really grew me as a software engineer.
Cons: The leadership was filled with toxic masculinity. They rejected me for a return offer despite having developed some of their product's core features to completion because I apparently "didn't turn on my camera enough." My assumption was that it was because I had healthy conflicts with them about work-life balance and didn't suck up to them.

Pros: - Great work-life balance at Amex.
- Smart, talented people.
- A really friendly (coffee chat) culture where people expect you, as an intern, to talk with them.
Cons: - Lots of legacy systems from years of off-shoring development work.
- Currently in a transition to bringing development on-shore and moving to agile, so there are some growing pains with that.
- The development environment could be much more streamlined.
