Provided with proper work tools and a comfortable working environment. The San Ramon facility has (or had) a nice cafeteria.
Middle management and VPs encouraged employees to make themselves fireproof or at least technosavvy so they would land well if they lost their jobs.
Outsourced a lot of IT to IBM, which in turn, offshored to other countries. The end result was a lot of AT&T employees out of work. The San Ramon facility was due for refurbishing. Training was encouraged, but not a lot was to be found.
Offer more training in the salaried IT area and make the process for taking advantage of the training more visible.
