I applied for the graduate software engineer position a few days after applications opened. I received an online assessment a few days later and completed all the questions.
Two months later, I received a response for a phone interview for a position I hadn't originally applied for. During the phone interview, I stated that I had applied for the software engineer position and wished to prioritize it, but was informed that there were no more spots available. I then confirmed that I was still willing to interview for the SRE position.
Afterward, I had to complete a system design interview, a code design interview, and a management interview. I received feedback and performed well in all interviews.
Ultimately, I was told that only one SRE position remained. I was rejected in favor of another candidate who had expressed a strong interest in pursuing a career in SRE. The reason given for my rejection was my greater interest in SWE over SRE. They used an honest question I asked against me in their decision-making process; it felt like a scummy move.
I felt set up for failure from the beginning, as there was no way I could have secured an offer despite performing well in every interview. Atlassian "hires" on a rolling basis, yet I was ghosted despite applying and completing the online assessment immediately after applications opened.
Next time, please do not interview candidates and waste their time when you already know your positions are filled.
The positive aspects of the interview process were the recruiter, who was nice and communicative, and the interviewers, who were also pleasant and fun to work with.
