Software Engineering Manager Interview Experience - New York, New York

Process

I was referred to Atlassian by a former coworker, and a recruiter promptly contacted me.

We went over several open positions that seemed like they'd be a fit and settled on one to initially pursue.

A couple of weeks went by, and I reached out twice only to get no response.

A couple more weeks went by, and I reached out again to ask if the position was still open. If not, I asked if we could discuss other open positions.

I finally got a response then and was able to arrange for a first-round interview.

No information about the format or number of rounds was given, but they did send quality documentation over about the company and culture, all of which I reviewed in preparation for the interviews.

The interview itself went well, even running past the scheduled end time. The interviewer commended me multiple times on my answers, and the whole experience was very conversational.

The recruiter I'd been in contact with said he'd have feedback on any next steps within 24-48 hours.

A week went by, and I emailed him for an update and reiterated my interest in the position. No response.

Another week went by, so I reached out to the coordinator who set up the interview and was told they'd see if they could get some feedback.

Later that day, I received a generic rejection letter from Atlassian recruiting (not the recruiter I'd been in contact with) saying they went with other candidates.

Overall, it took a little over two months of chasing them down trying to arrange an interview, only to go through one 45-minute phone call to get a generic rejection letter.

This was by far one of the most frustrating experiences I've ever had as a candidate. I loved Atlassian's values and what I learned about its culture, but it seems now the process is over without any discussion about other open roles (other than the blurb in the generic letter about them reaching out in the future if they think there's a fit).

Given the number of times I had to chase them down, I find this unlikely.
