Principal Software Engineer Interview Experience - Singapore, Singapore

Process

A recruiter contacted me on LinkedIn for a Singapore opening. It took about a month to schedule the first round, which was a coding round. This round had three coding questions, which I believe I answered well.

Following that, there were four more rounds for technical, non-technical, and behavioral assessments.

Although all rounds included many technical questions, the interviewers seemed most concerned about behavioral and non-technical aspects. I consider analysis, design, code reviews, and documentation to be technical, but they asked more questions beyond these.

The rounds were scheduled at their convenience, often late at night my time, or early the next morning. It felt more like an interrogation than an interview.

To this day, I remain unsure what exactly they were looking for.

On technical grounds, they seemed to require an all-rounder proficient in multiple programming languages, with top-notch data structures and algorithms knowledge, experience in multiple OS development, and troubleshooting skills. Candidates were expected to know all corner cases for all OS, IDEs, and languages. In my opinion, these were basic technical expectations, yet they also sought candidates with an astounding grasp of behavioral aspects.

I did not receive feedback after these initial rounds. The recruiter then suggested attending almost the same set of rounds with another team (though with fewer rounds). This occurred three to four months later. I completed those rounds, which were mostly technical, but again included some grilling on behavioral aspects.

Once again, there was no clear indication of the outcome (I believe it was negative), yet they asked me to complete two more rounds with yet another team. I agreed.

After that, the recruiter asked me to go through another team, and I sarcastically declined. The recruiter became irritated with my reply; so be it.

Months later, another individual approached me. I asked a simple question: "Which team and what is the offer?" There was no response.

Questions

Common average to hard technical questions.

Some random questions on behavioral aspects, which even I can pick from a million random ideas.
