Process

Overall, it took one month.

After the recruiter call, a tech screen will be scheduled. This involves the same question posted on this site: generating protein sequences.

The onsite interview is split over two days.

Data modeling round: Given a collaborative document editor (assume Google Docs), you can make entries for each day. You then have to design a JSON document to store all the document content. This is not a system design question, but expect to design a JSON document. The second step is to create versions of each entry made to the document.

Tech debug and coding: They will provide lengthy code to debug and then ask a LeetCode Hard-style question to extend the design.

DNA sequences are strings of A, C, T, and G only.

Given a string, compute n-grams and create a map of [n-gram, list of all the sequences it is part of].

Given a search query, also compute n-grams and make a map of each n-gram and a list of sequences it is part of. Finally, do an intersection of all the lists of all the n-grams of the queries.

Extension: Characters other than A, C, G, T will be given, which can map to lists of characters. For example, R can map to A, G, and Y can map to C, T. Now, create all possible n-grams and then perform a search.
