Senior Backend Engineer Interview Experience - Waterloo, Canada

Process

Got reached by a recruiter who forwarded my resume to Best Buy to be "reviewed".

A day later, I got an email from Best Buy with a link to the Coderbyte platform to complete an online assessment within 48 hours. Once started, I was given 3 hours to complete the entire assessment.

The assessment was quite easy, focused on Java only, and divided into 3 sections:

  • Java questions
  • Code: Math problem
  • Code: String problem

Although the assessment was easy, the Coderbyte platform was buggy, and I could not run any test cases in my code. Trying to copy the code to run in an external IDE resulted in a popup saying it's better not to, to avoid being considered cheating. I had to submit the code without being able to actually test it.

Once the assessment was completed, I sent a message to the Best Buy employee explaining the bugs in the platform they were using. I got no answer.

The very next day, I was told by the recruiter that Best Buy had decided to not move forward.

It was a quite frustrating and unfair process, as I was not given proper tools to complete what was asked.
