Process

The interview process was pretty standard. It began with a first phone screen with a recruiter, followed by a second phone screen with an engineer. The process concluded with a full-day onsite interview, running from 9 am to 5 pm, which included a complimentary lunch.

Pros:

  • The company moved very fast.
  • The programming questions were enjoyable, and using an IDE instead of a whiteboard was a significant plus.
  • The provided lunch was good.
  • The handcrafted coffee was awesome.
  • The office space was nice.

Cons:

  • I didn't feel much excitement about the company from the recruiters.
  • The onsite interview was too long, running from 10 am to 5 pm. While mostly coding questions (which were fun), I was very tired by the end. I believe three 1-hour coding sessions would suffice for evaluating coding skills.

Questions

Most difficult:

A question that I solved with dynamic programming. I got it anyway.

Unexpected question:

Describe what happens when someone requests a web page from a browser. This question is too common; I've been asked it many times before. I expected Square to be more creative.
