Process

I handed in my resume at a career fair and also submitted it to the Bloomberg website. A Bloomberg employee called me about three weeks later to set up an on-campus interview for the next day.

There were two one-hour interviews, each conducted with a two-person panel. The questions were standard interview questions, with some brain teasers included.

Fast forward a month, and I received an email from HR asking to set up an on-site interview. The on-site interview experience was very positive. They covered hotel accommodations and travel expenses.

On the day of the on-site interview, an upper-level software manager interviewed me for an hour, asking logical questions. These were not typical programming interview questions; I had to explain my thought process and talk my way through to the answer. I believe I performed well in this part, as the interviewer was very pleasant.

Fifteen minutes later, I expected another technical interview. Instead, it was a behavioral interview with an HR representative, which completely caught me off guard. The only question she asked was, "Do you have any more questions?" This didn't make sense to me at the time, as I had already asked all my questions to the manager. I could only manage to ask, "Is this the last interview?" and "What's the next step in the interview process?" The entire interview lasted about five minutes, after which the HR representative promptly escorted me to the elevator.

I received a rejection email a week and a half later. I suspect the HR behavioral interview was the reason for the rejection, as I felt I finished the manager interview on a good note.

In any case, I would recommend:

  1. Dressing sharply.
  2. Preparing to ask and answer HR questions, even if they seem trivial.

Overall, I had a great experience going through the full interview circuit.
