I received an email after applying online, requesting a phone interview. I replied with my available dates, and the interview was scheduled for two days later.
The interview was fairly straightforward. I was asked to reverse a string in place recursively, and then to discuss designing an application that would provide directions around a campus. Following that, they inquired about my interest in working for Bloomberg.
I thought the interview went well, but I later received a rejection email.
For the campus map/direction app, I focused on the algorithms that create paths from one location on campus to another, as I have extensive knowledge of pathfinding algorithms.
I discussed dividing a map into grid squares and then using A* and BFS to find optimal paths.
I also addressed the issues associated with using grid square sizes that are too large or too small. My estimation suggested that an optimal size would be approximately the space a person occupies when standing.
