Financial Software Engineer Interview Experience - New York, New York

Process

I gave them my resume during a career fair at my university. They called a week or two later to schedule an on-campus (at my university, not theirs) interview.

They started with a technical interview with two of their engineers. After I seemingly passed that, as I knew the answers to the fairly factual questions they asked, they forwarded me to a Project Manager. With him, I discussed my experience.

He explicitly told me after the interview that he was very impressed, even though I had not prompted him for any evaluation. They told me they'd get back to me that very Friday, but they contacted me the following Monday with a rejection.

I really don't understand why they rejected me when everything went so seemingly well, and I'm a little annoyed. I also thought the tech interview was silly because they mostly asked factual questions about C++ that you either knew or didn't.

Questions

You have a C++ program where you declare a variable int x = 2;. Somewhere in the same function, but much later, you print the value of x and it's 3000. You haven't altered the value of x anywhere, so it's still supposed to be 2. How do you debug this, and why might this have happened?

What is a virtual function in C++? How can virtual functions be implemented by the compiler?

Is it possible to make a virtual static function in C++?

You're given a set of strings. You want to test if any two strings in the set are anagrams.
