Senior Software Engineer Interview Experience - New York, New York

Process
A recruiter reached out on LinkedIn, and I was matched with two teams. Both interviews were fairly standard phone screens. They went over my resume and asked relevant questions about my experience, mostly basic Java interview questions. Then, they asked one LeetCode Medium coding question, and finally, a system design question.
Overall, the interview was not that difficult, but I was fairly underprepared and rusty, so I did not advance.

Pros: Good coworkers who care about their products and company.
They take pride in what they do.
New technologies flow in frequently.
A specific tech support team.
Cons: A very big range of technologies and domain knowledge to learn.
Frequent reorgs present challenges.
Because of the big range of technologies, accumulating a certain amount of them until you can make an impact takes longer than you think.
Some teams own very old code.

Worst spot in my career
Senior Software Engineer • Former Employee
New York, New York, United States
January 7, 2012
Pros: Snacks, location, colleagues, benefits, vacation time
Cons: Decreasing value year-over-year to my career. Developer management cares only about themselves and not their employees (I saw this in several groups). The company is overrun by suits trying to run software groups with too much influence on week-minded software developer managers. Heavy use of Fortran and proprietary tech. Spend more than a few years at this company and you will not be employable elsewhere.

Generous to community and charity.
Cons: Huge legacy codebase that will take years to deprecate.
