Most (but not all) of my managers have been people who have a technical background, often in the same area they are managing.
Most have been very understanding and accommodating of work-life balance.

Promotions can be hard to come by and dependent on how proactive your manager is. Many people move around within the company to climb the ladder, but excelling in a job you enjoy isn't always rewarded.
