They bought the whole company, then laid off everybody except the most lucrative division.
Don't be such amazingly greedy bastards? I don't mean to imply the company they bought was especially well-managed. Spinning off a lot of the accreted lines of business (many of which were poorly executed mergers in the first place) was a perfectly rational move. It's how they treat their remaining customers that tells you all you need to know about who you're dealing with.
