Pros

Personal development is led by you, but supported wholeheartedly by the company. Soft skills training is on offer, external courses for tech, online learning subscriptions, industry certifications paid for, and time off allocated for study and exams.

New work is coming in all the time, so there are lots of opportunities to move around and gain new skills within consulting roles.

There's an ability to see a project from the bid stage all the way through to completion.

There are opportunities for line management as an engineer without having to give up hands-on roles.

Great people are around you.

Pay and benefits are great.

This large company means you can leverage commercial partnerships, and yet each unit retains a small company feel with short org charts and direct access to senior management.

Cons
  • Travel - but this is true of all consulting roles.
  • Career development isn't handed to you on a plate - which is fine if you're motivated, but you could easily coast if not.
  • Promotion process can be onerous, especially at senior grades.
Advice to Management

Keep doing what you're doing and listening to employees. Devolved responsibility to the unit directors is key to employees feeling valued, as it allows decisions to be made closer to the ground. That's a key differentiator from other consultancies I've worked at.
