Process

This experience was quite similar to what others have described. Large companies often employ the same methods for hiring employees. It's beneficial to prepare for the interview day weeks in advance.

I applied at the end of the summer. The recruiter conducted a phone screening. Following that, there was an online coding assessment. After passing the assessment, the interview was scheduled for several weeks later, in September.

For preparation, I reviewed problems on LeetCode (easy and medium) and HackerRank. You can find Capital One-specific LeetCode problems by searching on Google. Reading "Cracking the Code Interviews" was helpful. I also recommend searching for common behavioral questions and preparing more than five stories that meet the STAR criteria.

As the company emphasizes Agile methodology, it's advantageous to familiarize yourself with Agile, Scrum Master, and Product Owner roles.

During the technical and behavioral interviews, remember to relax and articulate your thought process clearly when walking through problems. Don't hesitate to ask questions if you don't understand something. Be aware that interviewers might sometimes feign misunderstanding to test your clarity. I felt I overprepared for this portion.

The case interview, however, is where I struggled. I went in with the intention of asking more questions than directly answering questions about the online bank case. The issue was that the interviewer was uncooperative and stonewalled my questions. Consequently, I was left with vague facts and nothing to expand upon, forcing me to rely on my own experience. The interviewer struggled to relate to my responses. The session ended 10 minutes early, and the interviewer disconnected without further discussion. After this interview, I knew it was unlikely I would proceed, even though subsequent interviews went more smoothly.

For the complex if-else problem, I practiced with the following code snippet. I hope this helps you prepare for Capital One and other large companies.

java boolean approved (boolean a, boolean b, boolean c) { if (a) { } else if (!c) { if (b) { if (!a) { return false; } else { return true; } } else { if (c) { return true; } else if (!b) { return false; } else { return false; } } } else { return true; } }
