For the most part, the right kind of people are in management. They hire passionate, smart people who love to apply their skills to hard problems.

Cons

If you want to progress through the ranks, you need to become a very public evangelist for the company.

If you rely on your technical ability alone, you will be rewarded with promotions, but not as large or as frequently as if you host a meetup.

Advice to Management

Acknowledge and reward the engineers that create the products you rely on, just as much as your charismatic evangelists. It's what real tech companies do!
