Process

  1. Phone call with HR making sure you are serious.
  2. Informal chat with a senior engineer on the team you are targeting, asked a bit about your CV, basics of software design, what you are interested in.
  3. Take home task lasting about a week, building a very simple service. Took 10 hours for me to do it at about production-readiness.
  4. Group chat with a senior engineer and tech lead about software architecture, and designing how you would put a service online which communicates with others.
  5. Chat with product lead about your background and the kind of problems they face.
  6. Chat with HR, and they flat out ask you your salary expectations to proceed.

I enjoyed talking to the technical people, but it was obvious HR was playing games. I applied for a senior role and got very good feedback, but they tried to hedge their bets by having me work my way up - with no guarantees, of course. Wasted 15 hours+ total applying for this role.

They should make their salary bands public, and be upfront with you about what you are applying for.
