Pros
  • Smart colleagues
  • Great pay and benefits
  • Interesting work, depending on the team
Cons
  • Managers are forced to fire 10% every year, which is more than Amazon (6%).
  • There are no quantified metrics in performance evaluation.
  • Firings are often political and can be done with generic feedback that applies to many other team members, including top performers.
  • Some managers and directors hire colleagues from previous companies and protect them from being fired, even in cases of blatant underperformance (e.g., never completing deliverables and showing up to work high).
Advice to Management

Stop the forced attrition and take steps to prevent nepotism. No other top trading firms have forced attrition policies for engineers, so Citadel doesn't need them either. No top tech companies besides Amazon have them either.

They disincentivize collaboration and information sharing (thus increasing the cost of building software), and they give the company a bad reputation as a workplace and increase unwanted attrition.
