Process

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks.

I applied online and heard back within about a week for an initial phone screen with a recruiter from the Talent Acquisition team. That call was mostly culture and background focused, walking through my experience, why I was interested in Clio, and general fit. It lasted about 30 minutes.

After that I was invited to schedule the technical round, which was booked through a scheduling link with several time slots offered per day. This stage combined two back-to-back 60-minute sessions in one sitting (2 hours 15 minutes total): a Programming interview and a System Design interview, each with a different interviewer from the engineering team.

The Programming interview was done in CoderPad with screen share. It was a single problem that escalated through multiple parts as I solved each one, starting with a straightforward string manipulation task and adding complexity (edge cases, formatting requirements) as I progressed. They explicitly said it wasn’t meant to be a pure LeetCode-style test, and the focus was on communication and problem-solving process as much as the final solution.

The System Design interview followed immediately after with a different interviewer. It was a mock exercise (in my case, designing a cloud file storage system) done via Zoom whiteboarding, covering requirements gathering, data modeling, and scaling considerations.

According to the process overview they shared upfront, the full loop is meant to include four stages total:

  • Programming
  • System Design
  • Technical Leadership
  • Culture Add

I did not advance past the combined Programming/System Design stage. Communication throughout was clear and the recruiter was responsive. The process felt well structured and transparent about what to expect at each step.

Questions

In the programming interview, they asked me to write a function that converts a string into Pig Latin, then added follow-up requirements as I solved it: first modifying the rules slightly, then requiring that the solution preserve original spacing and punctuation in the output.

In the system design interview, they asked me to design a cloud file upload system, including a discussion of relational versus non-relational databases and how I would structure the data tables to support it.
