Software Engineer Interview Experience - Mountain View, California

Process

The interview process involved two technical challenges by HackerRank. These were not overly difficult but had lengthy, somewhat unnecessary descriptions. This was followed by a technical phone screen.

The final stage was a five-hour onsite interview.

While the people were very friendly and nice, the overall process felt unorganized.

  • The email stated one interviewer was an engineering manager, but he indicated he was not.
  • No interviewer had reviewed my resume beforehand.
  • Half of the interview time (two and a half hours) was spent coding alone, which felt strange.
  • For the first interview, I was asked to build a Hangman AI, and the interviewer left the room.
  • I was prepared for whiteboarding, but that did not occur.

This might have been better suited as a take-home project.
