Engineering Manager Interview Experience - Estonia

Process

There were two recruiters involved in the process.

There were five interview stages plus many calls with recruiters:

  • Chat with one of the managers - the manager was disengaged and unprepared.
  • Architectural interview - with a senior engineer.
  • Systems interview - with a staff IC. This was a mix of coding and system design, quite in-depth and fun, although a bit weird.
  • Management interview - by a director of engineering. This was the best interview, with a great vibe, questions, and response.
  • Technical fit - with other managers. You had to defend that you were technical enough by sharing in-depth about the system you were currently working on. This is where I failed. I am questioning the validity of this interview; I was explaining a system I had been implementing myself for three years, and I received feedback that I was not in-depth enough.

My main complaint is that the second recruiter was completely disengaged:

  • Ignored joining one of the calls.
  • Joined an interview while driving a car.

Due to the complexity of the interview process, having a good recruiter is a must.
