Senior Software Engineer Interview Experience

Process

The interview was a one-hour Zoom session with the tech lead. He began with a brief introduction about himself and then asked me to discuss my recent experiences.

Following this, I was given coding exercises on HackerRank. While my code was correct, I was unable to provide the time complexity for the functions.

Afterward, I was informed that they would not be moving forward with my application. They stated that the technical bar had not been met and alluded to the expectation of more communication with the interviewer during the coding process. I interpreted this to mean that I was expected to work through the code mentally while simultaneously explaining my thought process to the interviewer. The interviewer was receptive to questions, but this implied a need to consider how each question posed would be evaluated alongside all other aspects of the interview.

Questions

  1. What's a challenge you encountered in your recent work and how did you resolve it?

  2. Given an array of numbers, find the maximum difference between any two numbers such that the larger number appears after the smaller number. Provide the time complexity. Optimize it for efficiency. Provide test cases.

  3. Given an array of numbers, find all sets of three numbers whose sum is zero. Provide the time complexity and provide test cases.
