Senior Software Engineer Interview Experience - San Francisco, California

July 1, 2017
Negative ExperienceNo Offer

Process

The interview process included:

  • Recruiter round
  • Take-home project
  • On-site interview (covering project extension, architecture, current projects, and culture fit)

Unfortunately, I was dismissed after the first round. This felt rather rude, especially as I was scheduled for lunch during the second round.

Instead of focusing on design, the interviewers seemed preoccupied with DateTime parsing logic in Java. They spoke over me whenever I made a minor mistake, before I had a chance to correct it. It was clear they perceive themselves as overachievers, despite their relatively short careers. This is certainly not a suitable environment for senior engineers.

Coding live on a web application within 90 minutes, including introductions, is quite challenging. In today's work environment, it's unrealistic to expect perfect recall of syntax for every class across multiple languages.

Questions

Design a web backend that, given a stock, finds the best price (start and end dates) from past history using stock APIs from Quandl, Yahoo, and Intrinio.
