Pros

Virtual first. It's nice having a lot of flexibility over your work schedule. Lots of smart engineers who are pleasant to work with, when politics don't get in the way.

Cons

Lack of coherent or consistent strategy from leadership. Our company strategy:

  • Cutting benefits; used to be industry-leading, now below average.
  • One of our "pillars" is "Make work human," but the recent layoffs and cuts to benefits (especially parental leave) make it seem like a bad joke.
  • Promotions/calibrations are super political, very hard to make progress even if you are excelling in your role.
  • Yearly re-orgs create a lot of thrash; many teams lose whole quarters of productivity due to ramping up on new domains.
  • Teams are force-fed OKRs that end up highly discouraging collaboration with other teams.
Advice to Management

We can't keep committing to a strategy and then changing our minds three months later. The way leadership slashed benefits and handled the communications was very tone-deaf and regressive. Even worse, when hundreds of employees tried to provide constructive feedback/asked for clarifications, benefits were cut even more. If I leave Dropbox, this will be a big reason why.
