Pros

You get a lot of respect at this level. You get to set the direction of the technology and invent new technologies.

Cons

Corporate politics play a big role in how things get done at Electronic Arts, although this was improving with the removal of the studio GM role.

Advice to Management

Continue the work of decentralizing management and work toward creating independent game teams. Central technology groups should not exist. If they do, it should be for the purpose of research and should serve as a "change of pace" for senior technologists within the organization. Great technology comes from great games. It is unrealistic to create technology in a vacuum and expect widespread adoption. Encourage communication amongst technologists across the studios; they will naturally end up sharing technology amongst themselves. Sr. Engineers are highly creative people. Giving them free time to work on exercising that creativity will lead to game-changing innovations.
