Laid-back culture on some teams (emphasis on some). Depending on the manager, not that strict about hours in the office. Health benefits and a percentage match for 401k were good.
Constant reorganizations.
Seems to happen regularly every few years to the same effect: chaos and uncertainty.
Unsympathetic business leaders and managers who don't understand or care about tech debt or the actual work that goes into building software.
Seems like there might be a discrepancy between the new upper leadership (mainly from Apple) and engineering leaders wanting to transform GM into a 'tech' company, and mid/lower-level management who only care about meeting hard deadlines. This placed unrealistic expectations on engineers and resulted in failed launches and half-assed products.
Tons of micromanagement on some teams from their direct leaders (i.e., tracking every hour worked during a sprint, getting admonished for not meeting 'quota' despite getting required work done and more).
Some managers on teams don't even know about what engineers on their team have actually accomplished or worked on.
Internal tooling tends to suck with very little support.
It was very good. There was a coding online assessment and then an hour of behavioral interview. I got the offer in the next month. General questions about General Motors. I was referred by a recruiter.
It was easy, and there was no coding portion of the interviews except the online assessment. The interviewers were very nice and easygoing. There were two interviewers who asked various questions.
I only got to the coding assessment, which was fairly easy. I received no response after that. There was no actual interview conducted with another employee. Apart from that, the instructions for the coding assessment were simple.
