My CodeSignal live coding assessment was provided. The interviewer seemed more junior than me. The template code was broken for my preferred language. Fortunately, it was fixed, and I was given some extra time.
I submitted working code that utilized string manipulation. Even the interviewer admitted he had solved a very similar real-life problem at work using string manipulation instead of REGEX.
The frustrating part is that I was rejected solely because I couldn't provide a working REGEX in a timely manner. The choice of such a code challenge feels entirely pointless. I was expecting a genuine engineering problem that would assess my conceptual thinking and problem-solving skills, rather than my ability to memorize something you rarely need and can easily look up online in seconds.
The challenge was to parse a dummy application log and aggregate statistics.
