Process

Before I begin, I want to emphasize that clearing the HubSpot interview can be straightforward if you study the provided interview questions and conduct further research on platforms like LeetCode. It's likely that interviewers are aware candidates are preparing for specific technical questions, yet they haven't changed them significantly over time. This approach aims to assess a candidate's suitability as a "HubSpotter." Possessing a solid understanding of basic data structures and algorithms is generally sufficient to pass the technical interview with ease. I strongly believe the behavioral aspects are the most crucial, as they primarily gauge cultural fit. This sentiment likely applies to most interviews, even at FAANG companies.

Upon application, you will encounter an online assessment. Its difficulty may vary depending on your background. This assessment typically involves retrieving information from a REST endpoint, modifying it, and then sending it back, with data sorting required in between. With adequate "research," this can be solved easily. A helpful hint is to explore LeetCode or GitHub, but focus on understanding the concepts rather than copying solutions, in case you are questioned about your approach.

After successfully completing the online assessment, a recruiter will likely reach out for a discussion. They will ask general questions and outline the subsequent steps. It's important to be pleasant, polite, and enthusiastic. Monotone or indifferent delivery can be off-putting; demonstrate genuine interest in the role.

The recruiter will then describe the interview process, which typically includes:

  • One 1-hour session combining behavioral and technical questions.
  • A second 1-hour session combining behavioral and system design questions.

As mentioned, the behavioral component is likely the most significant. If you've successfully navigated the online assessment and conducted thorough research, you should be well-prepared. A common misunderstanding is believing that having the "exact" right solution, whether found through research or inherent knowledge, is paramount. The ability to articulate your thought process and genuinely understand your solution is key. Be receptive to the interviewer's suggestions. For instance, if an interviewer prefers a relational database over NoSQL for a specific scenario, politely explain your rationale for considering NoSQL, but then proceed with their preferred choice. The objective is to collaborate on finding solutions, not necessarily to prove you are always right.

Furthermore, mastering the STAR technique for answering behavioral questions is essential. Demonstrate humility and, crucially, avoid speaking negatively about previous colleagues or collaborators. Do not assign blame or present yourself as infallible. Your recruiter should provide guidance on the types of behavioral questions to expect, so practice them using the STAR technique.

Ultimately, your performance in the behavioral interviews is likely the primary determinant of receiving an offer, assuming you possess adequate data structure and algorithm knowledge and have prepared for the technical questions.

My interviewers and recruiter were notably pleasant and encouraging.

Successfully clearing the coding, system design, and behavioral assessments, coupled with being perceived as a cultural fit – polite and approachable – will lead to an offer. This process is often considered one of the easier new grad interviews due to the abundance of readily available information online and on platforms like Glassdoor. Invest the necessary time if you aspire to secure a high-paying job straight out of college. While the technical aspects are generally straightforward, the overall difficulty is elevated because computer science majors and software engineers are sometimes perceived as lacking in interpersonal skills. Researching the company and its products is also highly recommended to demonstrate genuine interest.
